Highly appreciated by hunters, mouth blown is popular because hunters enjoy the accomplishment, when they successfully call a coyote in with one. Unlike the electronic calls, mouth calls are very easy to use and also they come at a reasonable price.
Many people switched to mouth blown because hand calls ( especially Lohman ) were no longer available so forced by circumstances hunters looked for efficient alternatives. An efficient product is the Circe P5 which has a raspy and gravely voice, highly appreciated among hunting enthusiasts. Although this product has a minus due to the fact that it is metal reeded, the Circe suffer from slobber-rot ( a long day of calling and they have to be set aside to dry out ), it still proves to be very efficient that is why it is still very popular nowadays.
The plastic reeds in the Lohman models are much more forgiving to spittle. Except in sub-zero temperatures when they –along with metal reeded calls– freeze up, this doesn’t come as a surprise because all professional hunters know that under rough circumstances, callers lose their efficiency.
An alternative to mouth blowing is howling which requires prior training in order to have visible results. One of the main advantage offered by this kind of calling is that hunters can build their own howling callers, usually these callers have a cylindrical piece of plastic, surrounding the reed so that no pressure is asserted to it. These are the basic callers, for professional callers it is advisable to purchase them from shops that provide this kind of tools.
Depending on the wooden barreled call, the tone can be very “efficient” thus improving the chances for a successful hunt. If the make-shift howler takes less lung power to blow this is very good because hunters won’t get tired that easy resulting in a longer hunting activity. Many hunters affirm that howling is way more efficient in comparison with for example, the squalls of a dying rabbit calls.
A good way to stop a scared coyote is by making a couple of yips or whines and in the vast majority of the cases, they will always stop and look back, giving the shooter another chance for a direct hit.
Becoming more and more popular among professional but also amateur hunters are the electronic calls due to the fact the young hunters don’t enjoy the “classic” types of callers, preferring the hi-tech ones. This type of calling is more expensive comparing to the ones previously mentioned so the availability is slightly lower. Also, the tapes come at a steep price. Here are several electronic calls available on the market which are considered efficient by hunters world-wide :
